The Archive, the Database and Research
The UK National Inventory of War Memorials has evolved from a 3 year project to study war memorial sculpture to a 12 year marathon involving 3 full time staff, five voluntary staff and over 500 volunteer fieldworkers. |
 |
Background and Aims
War memorials are a familiar site in the landscape of the United Kingdom (UK). They provide insight into not only the changing face of commemoration but also military history, social history and art history. |
 |
Fieldwork and Cataloguing
Information has been collected through standard recording forms which were sent out to voluntary organisations such as local history societies and family history groups as well as individual fieldworkers. |
 |
Publications
The War Memorials Handbook gives guidance on how to approach the conservation of war memorials and how to use the United Kingdom National Inventory of War Memorials as an information resource. |
 |
Sponsorship
The National Inventory of War Memorials is dependent on sponsorship and donations for its continuation. Much remains to be done and any financial contribution, large or small, would be gratefully received. |
 |
News
We now have a 10 year plan which will enable increased access to the database. All we need to do now is find the funding to be able to initiate the first stage. |
