Merchant shipping was suffering terrible losses at the time (four million tons were lost during the war) and the supply of essential materials from America was threatened. However the industry underwent considerable expansion during the war and became an integral part in the battle for the Atlantic. For related drawings refer to: LD 1628, LD 1631, LD 1632, LD 6008 128

image: The image looks down upon four figures each sitting or lying on an irregularly shaped steel plate. They all wear protective clothing and three are seen using oxy-acetylene torches to cut complex sections of the steel plate that is used in shipbuilding. The forth sits upright, has taken off his mask for a rest, and is seen scratching his head.
