1914-15 Star

History
This Star, sanctioned by the King in 1918, is similar in design to the 1914 Star. However, there are differences in detail. The dates 1914-15 appear on the central scroll, while the smaller scrolls bearing the words 'Aug' and 'Nov' are omitted. The ribbon is identical to that of the 1914 Star.

Eligibility
Those eligible for the 1914-15 Star were as follows:

  • All officers and men of the Royal Navy, Royal Marines (Royal Marine Light Infantry and Royal Marine Artillery), Royal Naval Air Service, Royal Naval Reserve, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Royal Indian Marine and Dominion Naval forces, who were mobilised and served at sea, or on shore in a theatre of operations.
  • All officers and men of the RNAS employed flying from Naval Air Stations on overseas patrols.
  • All personnel of the Mercantile Marine serving under special Naval engagements.
  • All canteen staffs who served in a ship of war at sea.
  • All officers, warrant officers, Non Commissoned Officers and men of the Army including the Territorial Force; the Royal Flying Corps; Queen Alexandra's Imperial Military Nursing Service and the Territorial Force Nursing Service who actually served in a theatre of operations.
  • All officers, warrant officers, NCO's and men of the Indian Army who actually served in a theatre of operations.
  • All officers, warrant officers, NCO's and men of the Dominion Forces, including the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps and the Canadian Expeditionary Force who actually served in a theatre of operations.
  • All officers, warrant officers, NCO's and men of those Colonial Units who actually served in a theatre of operations.

Reverse

All civilian medical practitioners, nursing sisters, nurses and others employed with military hospitals, who actually served on the establishment of a unit in a theatre of operations.
Individuals in possession of the '1914 Star' were not eligible for the award of the 1914-15 Star. The total number of 1914-15 Stars awarded is as follows:

  • 1914-15 Stars 2,078,183

Both the 1914 and 1914-15 Stars were struck by the Royal Mint.
